A Study on the Exogenous Sources related to the Wound Infection of the Surgical patients

Abstract
Wound infeciton of the surgical patients may lengthen the patient¡¯s hospital stay, and may burden the patient economically and psychologically. The possible sources of wound infection may be classified into endogenous sources and exogenous sources ; the exogenous sources of the hospital infection can be eliminated according to multidisciplinary effort of the hospital personnels. The author investigated various possible sources which may cause hospital infection including air in the hospital rooms, scrubbing hands, dressing hands, surgical instruments & materials, and dressing instruments & materials during the period from September 1, 1988 to September 28,1988. The results obtained were as follows; 1) There was no problems in sterility of surgical instruments & materials used at operating rooms and dressing instruments & materials used at wards. 2) The most frequent airborne microorganism cultured was Staphylococcus aureus, followed by Streptococcus strain and Pseudomonas strain in the order of frequency. 3) The strains of airborne microorganisms consisted of 4 strains of gram(+) bacteriae, 6 strains of gram (-) bacteriae, and fungi. 4) The strains of the airborne microorganisms obtained from the operating rooms were similar to those obtained from the wards.
